3-page typed letter signed by Henry Van Dyke, Dutch American author, poet, academic, clergyman and diplomat. On Legation of the United States of America embossed letterhead, and written to Edward Bok, Editor of "The Ladies Home Journal". Bok had suggested that Van Dyke visit Berlin to give a talk there, which Van Dyke rejects because "In the present condition of affairs I do not believe that talking is of very much use. This is the time for action, and the talking will come later. I am driving along with my work in the spirit of one who believes it is necessary to be prepared to resist war, and that the end of this preparation is the ultimate protection of peace...". Minor soiling to the margins.
