360 pages of text. Hardcover binding. Dustjacket is sunned on spine, and browned on top-edge; one 1/2" tear to rear, and minor soiling overall and wear to extremities; protected in archival mylar. Illustrated with plates, many folding and in color. Signed by Esler Dening, son of author. He supervised the publication of the third edition in 1930, and contributed a preface and some notes. In this first printing of the fourth edition, he has contributed the forward, and inscribed on the first free endpaper "This book is not mine but I append my name with compliments! [signed] Tokyo 1955." On the bottom of this page is a small stamp of the Hon. T. C. Davis, the Canadian Ambassador at the Embassy in Tokyo at that time. Slight offsetting from plates to surrounding leaves. Tipped in at rear is the publisher's printed prospectus for this book, mostly in Japanese characters mixed with English. Autograph, Japan.
