Hill was a member of the New York state assembly (1871-1872); Mayor of Elmira NY (1882); Lieutenant Governor of NY (1883-85); Governor of NY (1885-1892); defeated 1894; US Senator from NY (1892-97); candidate for Democratic nomination for President in 1892; delegate to Democratic National Convention from NY 1896 and 1904.
