Document signed by George B. McClellan as Governor of New Jersey, on December 9, 1880. The letter is written on engraved State of New Jersey Executive Department letterhead. Written in a secretarial hand, it reads "His Excellency, Alonzo B. Cornell, Governor State of New York, Sir: I hereby recommend Mr. Charles W. Potter for the appointment of Commissioner of deeds for the State of New York residing at Toms River in this State. Very Respectfully, [signed] 'Geo B. McClellan' Governor." Father of George Brinton McClellan (1865 - 1940). Born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County PA, on December 3 1826. Democrat. General in the Union Army during the Civil War; candidate for President of the United States in 1864; Governor of NJ 1878 - 81. Member of the Loyal Legion and Freemasons. Died October 29 1885. Attractively matted and framed with a 19th century engraving of the General writing a letter in the field during the Civil War. Military, Politics. A clean and attractive example of McClellan's autograph.
