One page partly printed document, with numerous sections completed by hand. Signed by Governor Parsons, and Secretary of State Daniel McClure, with an impressed state seal. When unfolded, measures almost 10 inches wide by 15+3/4 inches in height. Minor foxing to paper, and document was folded into sixths for filing and storage purposes; docketing on reverse. Willard was a member of the Indiana state house of representatives (1850-1851); Lieutenant Governor of Indiana (1853-1857); Governor of Indiana (1857-1860); died in office 1860. Document reads "The State of Indiana, To All Who Shall See These Presents-Greeting: Whereas, William Carthcart has deposited in the office of the Secretary of State for the State aforesaid, a Certificate of the Commissioner of the Saline Lands in the county of Orange and the State aforesaid, countersigned by the Auditor of the State, whereby it appears that full payment has been made in pursuant to law for the South East quarter of the North East quarter of section number 5, town 1, N. of Range 2 west, in said County which said tract of land was purchased by Samuel Scarlet...the seventh day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven, the 42nd year of the State, and of the Independence of the United States the 82nd." An attractive document.
