Original brown hardcover cloth binding with moderate rubbing to extremities and slight bumping to corners; gilt lettering and decoration stamped on front cover and spine. Binding protected in custom stiff archival mylar. Contains nearly 270 half-tone reproductions in sepia, and ten full-page plates in color. With an introduction by Frank Falkner, and a supplementary Chapter by T. Sheppard, F.G.S. This, the Subscriber's edition, is limited to 250 copies, of which this is hand-numbered 71, and is printed on handmade parchment paper (thick high quality). Includes the printed announcement "Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to accept the first numbered copy of this work" laid-in at the front of the book. Ex-libris bookplate of Alderman John Brown unobtrusively on front pastedown, and a few ownership blindstamps in margins of text. Brown is listed in the list of original subscribers at end of text. Includes bibliographic notes. Text block is separated at several places, detaching several pages of text from binding. Pages remain in excellent condition, but considerable care in handling is required to maintain the present condition. An attractive copy of this scarce edition.
