Washington, D.C: Not published, 1840. No edition. Unbound. Quarto (4to). Very good condition. Item #005479

One page letter written entirely in the hand of and signed by John Davis. Democrat. U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania 6th District (1839-1841). Written on a large vellum sheet, folded to become the envelope, addressed to Col Joseph H Purdy of Trenton New Jersey, and free franked by Davis; red wax seal of the House of Representatives intact. Cancelled March 10 with round blue ink stamp. Letter reads "Washington DC March 10th 1840. Dear Sir, This has been a grand day for New Jersey. Dr. Petrikin's amendment was carried yeas 111 nays 91 the resolution as amended was the adapted yeas 111 nays 80 after a delay of three months. Justice has at length been done at this result. I am as much gratified as you can be, yours truly, [signed] John Davis. PS: two or three of the opposition voted with us they may move a reconsideration tomorrow [signed] J Davis." David Petrikin (1788-1847); Democrat. Member of Pennsylvania state legislature; U.S. Representative from PA 15th District (1837-1841). As far as we could determine, this amendment mentioned concerns the Right to Petition or Gag Rule, concerning abolitionists, the details of which were published in the "The Anti-Slavery Examiner" in 1840 by the American Anti-Slavery Society. Both Davis and Petrikins were PA senators who together participated. Another John Davis from Indiana was involved, but we have not been able to determine with certainty which Davis wrote the letter, but it is extremely likely that it was the Pennsylvanian. Regardless, it is an interesting document, in all likelihood pertaining to the abolitionist cause. John Davis (1788-1878).
