no place: No publisher, 1864. No edition. Unbound. Very good- condition. Item #005484

Four line quote from "Poems" signed and written entirely in the hand of poetess Jean Ingelow. It reads: "Far better in its place the lowliest bird; Should sing aright to God the lowliest song; Than that a seraph strayed should take the word; And sing his glory wrong. [signed] Jean Ingelow Nov. 29th 1864." Her work "Poems" was first published in 1863; this quotation was published as the last stanza of the section titled "Honors II." Paper measures 5+15/16" (width) x 3+3/4" (height). It was folded into thirds, and has minor creases. Bottom edge has two small tears and a small chip, not affecting any writing. However, an old tape repair at the bottom edge has stained the writing, affecting the date only. Suitable for framing.
