New York, NY: American Express Company, 1873. First Edition. Unbound. Quarto (4to). Very good+ condition. Item #006399

An engraved stock certificate, issued by the American Express Company No. 10874 for 12 shares valued at $100 each to Chester Hair of Syracuse, NY on February 3, 1873. Illustrated with a vignette of a dog's head. Printed in black ink with orange center background design. Signed in black ink by the president of the company "Wm G. Fargo" and by the Secretary and Treasurer. This certificate was cancelled in 1894, with a stamp on the front, and several cancel punch holes. Neither the stamp or any of the punch holes affect Fargo's signature, which is legible and attractive. The Treasurer's signature is heavily affected by punch holes. In 1844 Fargo organized, with Henry Wells (1805-1878) and Daniel Dunning, the first express company (Wells & Co.; after 1845 Livingston & Fargo); in 1850, Wells became president and Fargo secretary of the American Express Company; (1851) Wells, Fargo & Company, etc.
