HAND-BOOK OF CHICAGO'S CHARITIES [Illustrated with a fold-out map of Chicago]

Chicago, IL: Illinois Conference of Charities and Corrections, 1892. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo (8vo). Very good- condition. Item #006599

180 pages of text. Original hardcover brown cloth binding with moderate shelfwear; title stamped in gilt on front cover; protected in custom stiff archival mylar. No dustjacket [doubtful that it was issued with a dustjacket]. Darker brown gilt-lettered spine label added at a later date (circa 1990), providing readable title and date from shelf. Illustrated with a fold-out map in red, green, blue and black, moderately darkened from offsetting from endpaper. Map titled "Map of Chicago's Charitable Institutions." Additionally illustrated with 18 black & white photographs, and 21 line-drawings or sketches of the buildings in which various institutions resided. Also, about a dozen illustrated advertisements, and several additional unillustrated. The photograph and early text pages are printed on excellent quality paper, but the remainder of the text is printed on highly acidic paper, which has been affected by moderate uniform browning, and is brittle and requires careful handling. All of these pages are detached from the binding, and several have minor chipping to page edges, with no loss of text. A rare Chicago item.
