One page typed letter signed by J. E. Springarn. Dated September 23, 1926, on "Troutbeck [estate], Amenia, New York" letterhead. Addressed to Rabbi Solomn Goldman of Cleveland, Ohio. In response to a request to present a lecture, Springarn refuses and recommends Lewis Mumford. Included is a file copy of the letter sent which elicited this response. Springarn was a WWI veteran; white leader in the NAACP; established the Springarn Medal; professor (1899-1911) of comparative literature at Columbia; founder (1919) of the publishing firm of Harcourt, Brace and Company.
