[xiv], clxxiv, 289 pages of text including an index. Original blue stamped hardcover binding with gilt spine lettering and front cover gilt stamp of the ship "Victoria." Spine has been skilfully rebacked using appropriate matching material; original spinestrip laid-down; slight to moderate soiling and shelfwear, with a few spots of staining to boards. Gilt remains reasonably bright and readable on spine, and bright on front board; protected in custom stiff archival mylar. Illustrated in black & white with two fold-out maps (bound-in) and 16 plates. First Series, No. 54. First edition of the Hakluyt publication. Minor foxing scattered throughout text. Weakness at center of text block; the beginnings of cracking, but no separation.
