Bound in full green leather by Ramage of London, with numerous gilt decorations that include spiders, a frog, flys, a butterfly, a cricket, beetles, a wasp, and a man holding a butterly or collecting net. The hinges are worn, and the front hinge is starting to crack, and there is minor rubbing to the extremities. The binding remains very attractive and intact, and would bring an insect lover or naturalist much delight. Aiken was an officer in the Indian Army during the Afgan War, and wrote this book in a humorous vein, but it is interspersed with interesting, useful and accurate scientific observations.
