London: Sold by Mr. Dodsley, in Pall-mall; Mr. Nourse, Mr. Millar, Mr. Vaillant, and Mr. Patterson, in the Strand; Mr. Waugh, in Lombard Street; and Mr. Willock, in Cornhill, 1753. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto (4to). Good condition. Item #014739

Four volume set; incomplete, lacking the frontisportrait and 6 plates in the 2nd volume. It appears as though they were never bound-in as there is no off-setting onto pages adjacent to where they should be located. Contains all nine of the folding maps, as called for, and 12 of the 19 engraved plates (including frontisports), as well as thirteen allegorical vignettes. Early full leather bindings are heavily rubbed and worn, with all hinges nicely repaired with Japanese tissue colored to match. Unfortunately the first volume is cracked in half, breaking the text block, with a few pages and one folding map detached; in need of a binder's attention and/or careful handling. Vol. I: xx, 399 pages of text. Vol. II: xvi, 374 pages of text, followed by [xvi] pages of index. Vol. III: xv, [i] blank, 255 pages. Vol. IV: xvi, 301 pages, [i] blank, followed by [xvi] index, and [iv] glossary. Minor foxing is present, a few pages with staining in the margins, and a few pages with small tears in the margins. Previous owner's name from July 1814 scrawled in a tiny hand on the front endpaper. Title continues "...To which are added, The revolutions of Persia during the present century, with the particular history of the great usurper Nadir Kouli." First edition.
