xx, 412 pages of text including an index of maps and charts.. Original brown cloth binding is quite worn, with half of the spine detached and the other half missing, and the front board detached. Small label at the bottom of the spine. Theological seminary bookplates on the inside front cover, without any marking in the text. Very minor foxing to the text. Complete with 30 maps, charts and sketches, most of which are fold-out, and many of which are large. Includes: 14 progress sketches; Nantucket Shoals and Sound; Martha's Vineyard Sound; Entrances to Buzzard's Bay and Narragansett Bay; Gulf Stream explorations, Sandy Hook to Charleston, and Florita to Tortugas; Gulf Stream chart; Plan of magnetic observatory at Key West; Entrance and approaches of Mobile Bay; Drakes' Bay and approaches, California; Coast of Labrador; Diagrams illustrating phenomena of the solar eclipse of July, 1860, etc. The maps are generally in very good or better condition, with some mostly minor mis-folding, and several are torn (mostly at the folds), with overall minimal foxing. First edition.
