180 pages of text including a bibliography. Hardcover binding is minimally sunned on spine and the top edge. The unclipped dustjacket is minimally toned on the spine; protected in archival mylar. Illustrated by 20 maps and plates, as well as four photographs. Previous owner's name neatly on the front endpaper. Page 38-39 lightly toned from newspaper offsetting. Includes a 22 line typed letter on Mertz's letterhead, written in 1979 to the recipient of the book, signed by Mertz. Included is an original etching of the figure with outstretched arms over Rio, pencil-signed and titled "RIO" by Mertz. The sheet measures 3.25 inches wide by 5 inches tall and is mounted on what is likely a book endpaper. This may have been (one of) Mertz's bookplates. The text is clean and unmarked. First edition.
