London: Printed by and for William Cole, 1822. First Edition. Hardcover. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Very Good+ condition. Item #019008
vi, 282 pages of text. Illustrated with 12 hand-colored plates. Dark green leather spine with raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration, and leather-tipped corners, with marbled paper-covered boards; minor shelfwear. No date of publication listed: circa 1822. The illustrations are frequently and incorrectly attributed to George Cruikshank. Except for the first two plates, and one additional, the plates are all signed in the plate "W.H" or in one case "T.A." William Heath (1795-1840) had a similar style to Cruikshank, and was an author and illustrator. There is minor foxing and soiling to several plates and pages. Slight separation of the inner hinge following the title page, with the binding remaining fully functional and attractive and the pages remaining firmly attached. This appears to the be the first edition of this work illustrated by William Heath.
