[94] pages. Original green decorative gilt-stamped binding with minor shelfwear and soiling, and some fraying and tearing to the spine where it meets the rear board. Illustrated with 45 plates, most of which contain multiple vignettes. Each plate is accompanied by a page of explanatory text. A few pages with small tears and/or minor soiling in the margins, and the rear endpaper is creased. There is a small stain on the title page in the corner margin where it meets the spine. First edition. Augustus Hoppin (1828-1896) was an American book illustrator, born in Providence, Rhode Island. Among the works featuring his illustrations are "Nothing to Wear" (1857), "Poliphar Papers" (1853). The best known works he illustrated included Holmes's "The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table" (1858), an edition of Washington Irving's "Sketch Book", and Mark Twain's "The Gilded Age" (1873). Hoppin joined the Mexican Boundary Commission in 1850 and among the drawings published in the report of the survey (in Bartlett's "Personal Narrative of Explorations..." published in 1854) are his drawings is "Prairie-Dog Town" and "Stampede of Wild Horses. In 1872 he produced three daily cartoons for the four-page sheet "Jubilee Days."
