Bound in full maroon leather signed "F.C." and with two-color inlays on the front cover of lotus leaves, buds and flowers and a dragonfly. There are three small indentations on the spine, which are slightly darkened. This Art Nouveau binding is otherwise minimally shelfworn. With illustrations by Miss M.E. Dear. Minor soiling scattered lightly throughout the text, and a few tiny bumps or creases to a few corners. The front flyleaves are soiled and one has a crease. The final signature (gathering of pages) is just starting to loosen from the binding. The text begins with "The Custom-House. Introductory to 'The Scarlet Letter'". First illustrated edition.
