New York, NY: Duttons, Inc., 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto (4to). Very good condition. Item #019439
Complete with 12 black-and-white illustrations. Each illustration is mounted on thick board which is backed with black cloth, and the entirety is hinged in an accordion style binding. The front board has a printed paper label, which is also signed by John Held, Jr. and hand-numbered 56; this label has minor soiling and scuffing. Included is the original linen covered slipcase, with a printed paper label. The slipcase is moderately worn, and has moderate discoloration and foxing, mainly to the back panel. The 12 illustrations are in excellent condition, with the occasional small fleck of discoloration or tiny spot of staining, mainly in the margins, which also occasionally have minor browning along the edges in what appears to be original glue reverse offsetting. The black cloth covering of the boards is unevenly and minimally discolored and spotted, with the hinges themselves remaining intact. The illustrations depict men and women in the act of hunting, horse jumping, fly fishing, golfing, skurfing or water skiing on a board, cross country skiing, parachuting, playing tennis, sailing, playing polo, boxing, and playing chess. Measures almost 12" wide by 11" tall. First and limited edition.
