283 pages of text. Hardcover binding: spine is lightly rubbed and darkened, with minimal rubbing to the corners; protected in archival mylar. Attached to the front endpaper is a one-page typed letter that folds out which is signed by Mencken. It is dated 1919, is on "The Smart Set" magazine letterhead, and addresses and E.H. Bierstadt to the fact that his submitted work "The Fifth Commandment" falls outside of the field of the publication. The text includes essays on Joseph Conrad, Theodore Dreiser, James Huneker, followed by a work titled "Puritanism As A Literary Force" in which Mencken alleges that William Dean Howells, Henry James, and Mark Twain were victims of the Puritan spirit. First edition.
