216 pages. Original green hardcover binding with minor browning to the top edge, minimal shelfwear, two small scuffs on the spine, and a tiny stain to the bottom corner of the rear board (not affecting the text). The original un-restored dustjacket retains the original price of $2.00 on the inner front flap, is lightly sunned/browned on the spine, with a tiny spot of soiling to the spine, a few tiny chips, as well as a few small tears and minor to moderate shelfwear; protected in archival mylar. The text is clean and unmarked. Stated "FIRST EDITION" on the copyright page. The fourth of the author's hard-boiled mysteries featuring Private Eye Philip Marlowe. Along with Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade novels, the Chandler series redefined the mystery genre, introducing it to a distinctly American vein. All of the first four Marlowe books, read as much for their vivid descriptions of 1930's-40's Los Angeles as for their engaging plots were made into movies. This novel had a modest first printing of only 6000 copies. As a book produced under wartime paper usage restrictions, the thin and cheap paper used to produce this book makes this a particularly difficult title to obtain in desirable condition.
