Moguntiae (Mainz): Typis Balthasaris Lippii, Impensis Heredum Andrea Wecheli, 1605. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Very good condition. Item #019586

De Rege: [viii], 372 pages of text, [xv] of index, [i] blank. Original decoratively blind-tooled tawed (whitened) pigskin (leather) binding with both brass clasps intact. The spine is slightly rubbed, the bottom of the rear board is slightly damp-stained, and there is minor wear and a small old repair on the rear cover. Lacks the front blank leaf. The text has minimal toning but remains clean and unmarked, except for a few minor old marginal notations and "Collegij Societatis Jesu Moguntiae 1606" being written on the title page and final page of text. De Ponderibus: 160 pages of text, [vii] pages of index. Second appearance of both works, first issued in 1599. Mariana (1535-1624), a Spanish Jesuit, was an important early economic and political theorist, and a leading figure of the School of Salamanca. In "De Rege..."Mariana argued, based on the Bible and Church doctrine that if the king does not follow religion and civil law it is justifiable to overthrow him."De ponderibus et mensuris" treats mainly of the comparative values of Roman, Greek, Hebrew, and Spanish weights and measures against those of Toledo. With this writing on weights, measures and another tract on money he contributed essentially to the construction of solid foundations for the commerce of his time. Kress 265.
