Two matching volumes. Purgatory: xiv, followed by 337 pages of text. Contains a frontispiece plus 60 full-page illustrations by Gustave Dore. Inferno: xxiv, 183 pages of text. Contains a frontispiece plus 75 full-page illustrations by Gustave Dore. Original gilt and black decorated and lettered bindings are moderately rubbed at the extremities, including at the bottom of the spine, and the inner hinges are tender and starting to crack but remain intact; protected in archival mylar. All edges gilt. There are a few pages with small spots of staining, but the text is mostly clean, bright and unmarked. The endpapers and front blankleaf of both volumes have a bookplate and dedication to an Art Club, and one title page has a few small numbers and letters, which are shown in the supplied photograph, but except for a ghost have been successfully removed by a conservator. Stated "New Edition" without a given publication date; circa 1886. Early edition.
