xvi, 528 pages of text including an index. Original hardcover green cloth binding with moderate rubbing to the extremities. The inner hinges are slightly weakened. Discoloration to the endpapers, and minor staining to the top margin of many pages of text. Measures 23cm (9 inches) in height. Illustrated with 2 plates and numerous in-text cuts. There is minor foxing and browning to the first and final few pages. Previous owner's armorial bookplate neatly on the front endpaper: Llangattock. Though a friend and supporter of Darwin, Lyell found it difficult to accept evolution in relation to man, and his cautious approach to the subject in this book disappointed Darwin. Second British edition.
