xx, 466 pages of text followed by [i] errata and [i] directions to binder for the placement of the illustrations. Newly rebound and resewn with a modern cloth spine with paper spine label, and marbled paper-covered boards. Contains a frontispiece, and two maps including one fold-out. Additionally illustrated with the occasional in-text woodcut. Previous owners name on original pastedown endpaper, neatly affixed to new endpaper in same position: Peter Garforth Bengal Engineers. Previous owner's bookplate on an original endpaper: J.C. Thackray Chiswick. There are a few small spots of discoloration on a few pages, but the text is clean and unmarked, and is untrimmed as well. Measures 9.25" x 5.75" (236mm x 145mm). First edition.
