Three volume set. Contemporary quarter leather bindings with moderate shelfwear and rubbing, and minor chipping to the leather spine labels. Some scuffing to the boards. Complete with 11 plates, including 3 frontispieces 2 of which are hand-colored, 4 plates, and 4 maps, 2 of which are fold-out and 2 of which are hand-colored. Minor foxing and minor soiling. This work was printed a dozen times in the author's lifetime, each edition having new, updated or corrected information. Lyell's work "denied the explanation of geological change offered by catastrophism, and may be to a large extent regarded as founding modern geology" according to Chamber's Dictionary of Scientists, p. 295.
