Two volume set in slipcase with brochure with the publisher calls a "Reader's Guide." Hardcover red cloth bindings with minimal shelfwear, in almost new condition. Slipcase with minor shelfwear and soiling. The price-clipped dustjackets have a cutout section on the spine to reveal the title lettering on the binding. The dustjackets have numerous small chips and tears, and there is clear tape repair on the back; protected in archival mylar. Dustjacket and title page illustrations by Reginald Marsh. Signed by the author on a front endpaper of the first volume. The text is clean and unmarked. First edition, with the date printed on the title page. However, we have not seen this format of the book split into two volumes, and consider it to be unusual. Vol. I: xvi, 747 pages. Vol. II: [v], pages numbered [748] to 1514. Brochure: 27 pages, half of which is a bibliography of almost wholly Southern sources.
