xiv, 152 pages, followed by [iv], 87 pages. Original quarter leather binding with marbled paper-covered boards; rebacked with original spine laid-down. Top edge of pages gilt covered. Signed by W. E. Gladstone on the title page, given to him by his father, Sir John Gladstone at Fasque in 1848. Engraved bookplate of W.E. Gladstone affixed to inside front cover. Authorship of this anonymously published work is sometimes attributed to Simon McGillivary and Edward Ellice, the elder, but was likely prepared by Samuel Hull Wilcocke. Pages [iii-iv] and [1]-2 of the second work are about a quarter inch shorter than all other pages, and are transposed. The text is clean and unmarked. William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898).
