Two page letter typed and signed by Mari Sandoz to Tunny Gray.
Lincoln, NE: unpublished, 1937. First Edition. Unbound. Quarto (4to). Very good+ condition. Item #020276
Two page typewritten letter, with a few corrections in hand, signed by Mari Sandoz. The first page is on the author's letterhead. Over 500 words in length, written to canine breeder Tunny Gray. Other correspondence between Sandoz and Gray is retained at the University of Nebraska. This letter regards Sandoz's opinion of a book on Lincoln, which leads into more detail about perspectives of matters going on during and after the Civil War era regarding the country's decades-long press against the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians (Native Americans) about which Sandoz has knowledge and is an authority. Topics mentioned include Ida Tarbell, Stanton, the Minnesota Massacre of 1863, annuities, Dakota Territory, the Sand Creek Massacre, Colorado Gold Rush, Nebraska, Crazy Horse, Fetterman, Custer, and Belknap. Additionally it mentions "...papers came back safely and are returned to my files..." which refers to material that Sandoz apparently loaned to Gray.
