Vol. I: xii, 266 pages of text including an index. Maroon morocco leather spine and corners with raised bands; minor dulling to spine with minor shelfwear; remaining in excellent condition. Illustrated with 54 hand-colored leaves of plates. Page 175/176 included twice. With previous owner's name in pencil to front endpaper "C. A. Briggs" and the entomologists London address. His light pencil notations are scattered throughout the text. Vol. II: [ii], [255]-298 pages of text including an index, followed by 21 page "Catalogue...Arranged According to Mr. Stephens' Lists...", [i] blank], followed by ii pages of Errata and Addenda. Bound to complement the first volume, without raised bands on the spine to accommodate the lengthy title. Original pale purple printed front wrapper bound in. Illustrated with 5 hand-colored leaves of plates. In total, the volumes contain 59 leaves of hand-colored plates, each containing 30 or more figures. The top edges of the closed page edges are gilted (t.e.g.). Minor dust soiling to the edges of some of the plates (which are not as tall as the text leaves) and to the adjacent pages. PROVENANCE: Vol. I: With previous owner's name in pencil to front endpaper of the entomologist "C. A. Briggs". His light pencil notations are scattered throughout the text. Also Briggs' bookplate is affixed to the inside front covers of both volumes. PROVENANCE: Vol. II: With previous owner's name "F. Bond" on title page and a few of his contemporary ink notations in the margins. Frederick Bond (1811-1889) was an important entomologist, lepidopterist and botanist who corresponded with and exchanged specimens with Charles Darwin. Measures 10 1/8" (height) (257mm).
