Sphingidae :pages 333-424 of Vol. XXVII, November 1920 of Novitates Zoologicae. Bound in half brown leather, with gilt lettering of the spine and front cover; minor scuffing and shelfwear. Complete. Illustrated with 10 color chromolithograph plates, and a black and white map. Bound with: Papilios: pages 295-319 of Vol. XXVI, January 1920 of Novitates Zoologicae. Complete. Illustrated with 3 color chromolithograph plates. A few pages are slightly foxed, but the majority of the text is clean and unmarked. The Reverend Arthur Miles Moss (1873-1948),was known as the "Vicar of the Amazon" as from 1912 to 1945, he served as the Anglican chaplain for Pará, Brazil. Because larvae (caterpillars) cannot be easily preserved without losing their color, Moss meticulously painted them. His stunning, scientifically accurate watercolor drawings of caterpillars are preserved in the Natural History Museum in London. First editions.
