Two volume set. Volume I: [vi], [x] pages containing a subscriber's list, [vi], lxix containing "A Life of Milton," followed by 416 pages of text. First state of the text with page 135 misnumbered as "13." Volume II: 390 pages of text. Matching navy morocco leather bindings, with gilt spine lettering and decoration, with minor shelfwear; "Baskerville" and the publishing date of "1758" in gilt at the bottom of the spines. Signed binding, stamped: Bound by C. Walters. Printed on laid paper, using a type that Baskerville took 7 years to design, with refinements to the ink used, as well as the equipment employed, attracting subscriber's such as Benjamin Franklin. Baskerville's (3-page) pledge to endeavor to select superior works, and produce them finely first appeared in this work, and not again elsewhere. Minor worming and some old repairs to some margins to the final 100 pages of the second volume, as well as minor soiling. The final page of the 2nd volume has some printing ink transfer caused by the printer placing a recently produced pages on the leaf containing the final page of this text. First printing of the Baskerville edition. Octavo: Height = 8 13/16" (224mm).
