First edition in English of Mendeleev's landmark chemistry textbook, providing the basis of the Periodic Law. Two volume set housed in a fleece-lined maroon leather drop-spine box. Original maroon cloth bindings with minor sunning to the spine, and minor shelfwear, including chipping to the top of the spine. Slight bubbling to cloth, and minor discoloration to the binding finish, and a minor warp to the front board of the first volume. Contains numerous in-text illustrations and diagrams. The top corner of about 20 pages near the front of the text are slightly stained; pages [i]-xvi and the first 150 pages of text in Vol. I have staining to the lower corner, affecting a few words of the final few lines of text on the page; an additional 100 pages have minimal staining to the bottom corner, not affecting the text. Vol. II has minor staining to the lower corner of about half of the pages.Vol. I: xvi, 611 pages of text. Vol. II: vi, 487 pages of text including an index, followed by 24 pages of publisher's advertisement. First published in Russian in 1868, the English edition is based on the fifth Russian edition. According to DSB, 293 "The periodic law is the focus of the work; beginning with the third edition it is more prominent because it had been verified experimentally. Mendeleev rewrote each edition, including all new scientific data - particularly confirmations of the periodic law - and reanalyzing difficulties that had arisen to hinder its confirmation (inert gases, radioactivity, radioactive and rare-earth elements)."
