li (51) pages of text. Original vellum/parchment binding is moderately shelfworn and soiled, with a scrape to the spine. The silk ties are lacking. The colophon states: Decorated by Day McBirney & printed by Everett Lee Millard, at the Elm Press, Highland Park, Illinois. Finished in January 1901. The type used is an adaption from the Golden type designed by William Morris. The portrait insert is a reproduction on India paper of an old engraving by W. Marshall. The edition consists of 85 copies on hand made paper, of which this is number "35." There is no "portrait insert" present in this copy. Poems included are: The Shepheards Hunting : An Eglogue Written During the Authors Imprisonment in the Marshalsey; Shall I Wasting in Dispaire; A Christmas Carroll; A Madrigal & A Sonnet; The Nymphs Song. ASSOCIATION COPY: inscribed on the front endpaper "For Miss Ellen Starr from the printer. Ellen Gates Starr (1859-1940) was an American social reformer and activist. With Jane Addams, she founded Chicago's Hull House. She traveled to England to study with the famed bookbinder, T. J. Cobden-Sanderson. After her return, she established a bookbindery class at the settlement house in 1898. George Wither (1588-1667). Height = 6.25" (157mm). First edition.
