This anonymous index refers to each clause of the poem under the most important noun, verb, etc. and contains about 3000 references in double columns. Lewis Carroll suggested and edited this index, compiled by one or more of his sisters, with Tennyson's permission. The poem was a tribute to Arthur Hallam.
