Manuscript orderly book; contains 62 pages of handwritten text by many different persons serving the Militia. Quarto; original full leather binding is heavily worn, with moderate rubbing at extremities, and hinges cracked and damaged, and some pages are loose. Spine is darkened from staining, and the first several pages are also stained and rippled. Sylvanus Dodge, father of Grenville Mellen Dodge (1831-1916), served as clerk of the Company of Cavalry, Massachusetts Militia, 1828-1830. Sergeant Dodge made the final entry in this register. Apparently, Sylvanus Dodge retained the register and it was kept in the family. At some time his son Grenville Mellen Dodge, probably as a youth, wrote (signed) his name in two pages of the register. G. M. Dodge is the son of Sylvanus and Julia Therese (Phillips) Dodge. U. S. Militia, Cavalry, Military.
